Easy Steps to Build a REST API in Node and Django

Introduction

Modern web applications often need to communicate with different systems. For example, an e-commerce website needs to retrieve product details, a mobile application needs to display user information, and a dashboard needs to fetch updated data from a server. REST APIs make this communication possible.

REST stands for Representational State Transfer, and API stands for Application Programming Interface. A REST API allows two software applications to communicate over HTTP using a defined set of rules. Node.js and Django are two popular technologies used to build REST APIs.

In this article, we will understand REST APIs, explore how to build them using Node.js and Django, and compare their advantages and use cases.

What Is a REST API?

A REST API provides endpoints through which a client can request or modify data on a server. The client might be a browser, mobile application, or another backend service.

REST APIs commonly use these HTTP methods:

  • GET: Retrieves data from the server.
  • POST: Creates a new resource.
  • PUT: Replaces an existing resource.
  • PATCH: Updates part of an existing resource.
  • DELETE: Removes a resource.

For example, an application that manages books might use /api/books to retrieve or create books and /api/books/1 to access a particular book.

APIs commonly exchange data in JSON format. JSON is easy for applications to read and process.

Building a REST API with Node.js

Node.js is a JavaScript runtime that allows developers to execute JavaScript outside the browser. Developers frequently use it with Express.js, a lightweight web framework, to create API endpoints.

Consider a simple API that returns a list of books. First, install Node.js and create a project directory. Initialize the project and install Express using the terminal:

npm init -y
npm install express

Create a file named server.js and add the following code:

const express = require("express");

const app = express();
app.use(express.json());

const books = [
  { id: 1, title: "Learn JavaScript" },
  { id: 2, title: "Learn REST APIs" }
];

app.get("/api/books", (req, res) => {
  res.json(books);
});

app.listen(3000, () => {
  console.log("API running on port 3000");
});

Start the server by running:

node server.js

Visit http://localhost:3000/api/books in a browser or API testing tool. The server returns the book list in JSON format.

This example demonstrates a basic GET endpoint. A production application would normally include a database, input validation, error handling, authentication where needed, and automated tests.

Building a REST API with Django

Django is a Python web framework that provides features such as URL routing, database integration, security protections, and an organized project structure.

For API development, developers often use Django REST Framework (DRF). It provides serializers, API views, request handling, and other tools that simplify building RESTful services.

To install Django and Django REST Framework, use:

pip install django djangorestframework

Create a Django project and application:

django-admin startproject myproject
cd myproject
python manage.py startapp books

Add rest_framework and books to INSTALLED_APPS in the project’s settings file.

A simple API view can return JSON data:

from rest_framework.decorators import api_view
from rest_framework.response import Response

@api_view(["GET"])
def book_list(request):
    books = [
        {"id": 1, "title": "Learn Python"},
        {"id": 2, "title": "Learn REST APIs"}
    ]
    return Response(books)

Next, connect this view to a URL in the application’s urls.py file:

from django.urls import path
from .views import book_list

urlpatterns = [
    path("api/books/", book_list, name="book-list"),
]

Configure the application’s URLs in the main project if necessary, then start the development server:

python manage.py runserver

The endpoint can now be accessed at http://127.0.0.1:8000/api/books/.

This example uses a fixed list for learning purposes. In a real project, Django models and a database can be used to store and retrieve records.

Node.js vs Django for REST API Development

Both technologies can build reliable APIs, but they have different strengths.

Node.js with Express is useful when a team prefers JavaScript across the frontend and backend. Its asynchronous programming model can be helpful for applications that handle many concurrent network requests.

Django with Django REST Framework is useful when developers want a structured Python framework with built-in database tools, an administrative interface, and a large ecosystem of extensions. It can be particularly convenient for applications that already use Python.

The best choice depends on the project’s requirements, the team’s skills, performance needs, existing infrastructure, and long-term maintenance plans. Neither technology is automatically better for every project.

Best Practices for REST API Development

When building an API, developers should follow several important practices:

  1. Use meaningful and consistent endpoint names.
  2. Return appropriate HTTP status codes, such as 200 OK, 201 Created, and 404 Not Found.
  3. Validate user input and return clear error messages.
  4. Use authentication and authorization when endpoints handle protected information.
  5. Never store passwords as plain text or expose secret keys in source code.
  6. Use HTTPS in production.
  7. Test endpoints with tools such as Postman or automated test suites.
  8. Document endpoints, request formats, responses, and possible errors.
  9. Use a database for persistent data instead of relying on an in-memory list.
  10. Apply pagination and filtering when APIs return large collections.

These practices improve reliability, security, and maintainability.

Conclusion

REST APIs are an important part of modern software development because they allow frontend applications, mobile apps, and backend services to exchange data through standard HTTP requests.

Node.js with Express offers a flexible JavaScript-based approach, while Django REST Framework provides a structured Python-based approach with many useful built-in features. Both can be used to create APIs for projects such as library management systems, expense trackers, e-commerce platforms, and educational applications.

For beginners, the best way to learn REST API development is to build a small project, test each endpoint, connect a database, handle errors, and gradually add authentication and automated tests. Practical experience with these fundamentals provides a strong foundation for developing production-ready APIs.
