ChatGPT Ads aren’t just something marketers are talking about anymore. They’re becoming a real advertising channel for businesses in India.
And when a new advertising platform shows up, there are two ways to learn about it: read the documentation, or actually get into the platform and work through a campaign.
We chose the second.
Our team at Valentius Kryptix, a Pune-based digital marketing agency serving businesses across India, started experimenting with ChatGPT Ads in Pune as the platform became available to Indian advertisers.
This article documents what we learned from that experience.
This isn’t a tidy case study with a neat “we spent ₹X and made ₹Y” ending. We’re not publishing confidential campaign information or numbers we can’t stand behind.
Instead, this is a field report on what we actually learned about setting up, thinking about, and working with ChatGPT Ads, and what we’d do differently next time.
ChatGPT Ads Have Arrived in India, and We Wanted to Test Them Early
ChatGPT represents a fundamentally different environment from traditional advertising platforms.
On Google, someone might search for:
“best CRM software for small business”
On Meta, a person might encounter an ad while scrolling through their feed.
Inside ChatGPT, the user can describe a problem in considerable detail. They might say:
“I run a 20-person SaaS company in Pune. We are spending too much time managing leads manually. What kind of CRM should we consider?”
That is a very different advertising environment.
OpenAI describes ChatGPT Ads as a system built around the context of what a user is exploring. Ads appear below relevant responses, are clearly labeled as sponsored, and stay visually and functionally separate from ChatGPT’s actual answer. The ad can’t influence what the model tells you, and advertisers never see the underlying conversation, only aggregate performance data.
That distinction immediately caught our attention.
For marketers, the interesting question isn’t simply “Can I advertise on ChatGPT?” It’s something closer to: “What changes when advertising shows up inside a conversation where someone is already explaining what they want?”
That was one of the questions we wanted to explore.
Why We Decided to Run an Early ChatGPT Ads Campaign
At Valentius Kryptix, we work extensively across performance marketing, digital acquisition, and emerging AI-led marketing opportunities. So when ChatGPT Ads became accessible to Indian advertisers, waiting around for years of industry benchmarks didn’t make much sense, mostly because there weren’t any yet. There was no decade of agency best practice to lean on and no mature playbook to copy. The platform itself was, and still is, evolving quickly.
Our objective wasn’t to prove ChatGPT Ads were automatically better than Google Ads or Meta Ads. It was to understand the platform.
What We Wanted to Learn
We wanted to answer questions such as:
- How does campaign setup differ from traditional advertising platforms?
- How should marketers think about audience relevance?
- What role does conversational context play?
- How should creative be approached?
- What should advertisers measure?
- Where does the platform still feel immature?
- Which traditional advertising assumptions no longer apply?
- Which businesses could realistically benefit from ChatGPT Ads?
Those questions turned out to be more useful than a dashboard full of numbers would have been.
A Note on What We Can and Can’t Share
Before getting into the campaign itself, one distinction matters.
We can share our process, observations, strategic thinking, and lessons learned. We’re not publishing confidential client information, proprietary campaign details, or performance numbers we can’t publicly back up.
So if you came here looking for a headline like “We spent ₹50,000 and generated 400 leads!”, you won’t find one. We’d rather publish an honest article without impressive-looking numbers than manufacture a case study around metrics that don’t belong in the public domain.
That matters even more with a brand-new advertising platform. As more advertisers enter ChatGPT Ads, benchmarks will become more meaningful. For now, first-hand operational learning is itself valuable.
Our ChatGPT Ads Campaign: What We Actually Set Up
The most important lesson from working with a new advertising platform is that campaign setup is never just a technical exercise. The buttons and fields are the easy part. The difficult part is deciding what the campaign is actually trying to accomplish.
OpenAI’s Ads Manager structures campaigns around objectives, budgets, targeting, and ad groups, with advertisers choosing between CPM (reach), CPC (clicks), or oCPC (conversion-optimized clicks) depending on the intended outcome. That means the same business could approach ChatGPT Ads very differently depending on whether the goal is awareness, traffic, engagement, or a downstream conversion.
Campaign Objective
We started by defining the business objective rather than starting with an ad. That sounds obvious, but it’s one of the easiest things to get wrong in performance marketing. A new platform can tempt marketers into asking “What should our ad say?” before asking “What exactly do we want the user to do?” Those are two different questions, and the ad should ultimately support the second one.
Audience and Market
We were particularly interested in the Indian market and the kinds of users who might encounter the campaign in genuinely relevant conversational contexts. This is where ChatGPT Ads starts to feel different from conventional search advertising. You’re not thinking “keyword → ad.” You’re thinking “user need → conversational context → relevance → message.” OpenAI’s targeting mechanism, called context hints, reflects that. Rather than keywords, advertisers write natural-language descriptions of the conversations where their offer is genuinely relevant, and the system matches based on semantic relevance rather than exact-match strings.
Campaign Structure
The campaign structure needs to reflect the business objective and the hypotheses you want to test. Ad groups on the platform are built around distinct themes or intents, each carrying their own context hints. For us, this reinforced an important principle: don’t put every message, audience, and hypothesis into one undifferentiated campaign. If you do that, you may get delivery, but you won’t necessarily learn anything.
Ad Creative
The creative needs to make sense in the context of a conversation. This was one of the areas where our thinking changed the most. A user asking a detailed question is already giving you information about what they care about. A generic “Discover the ultimate solution for your business!” is unlikely to land as well as “Compare CRM options designed for growing B2B teams.” The second message tells the user what the product is, who it’s for, and why it might matter right now.
Landing Page
The landing page isn’t an afterthought. The relationship between conversation → ad → landing page → action has to make sense end to end. Performance marketers already understand this from other channels, but in ChatGPT it matters even more, because the user’s original context can be much richer than a conventional search query. A landing page that doesn’t reflect that context breaks the thread.
Measurement and Tracking
Measurement needs to be considered before launch, not after. OpenAI’s measurement stack includes a browser-based Pixel and a server-side Conversions API, tied together through a click identifier (oppref) that attributes on-site actions back to the ad that drove them. For advertisers, the real question isn’t “how many people clicked?” It’s “what happened after someone clicked?” That distinction matters more as budgets grow. For the technical detail on how this actually works, see our guide to ChatGPT Ads Conversion Tracking.
What Surprised Us About ChatGPT Ads
This was probably the most valuable part of the exercise. We went in with years of accumulated thinking around Google Ads, Meta Ads, and performance marketing generally. Some of that experience transfers. Some of it doesn’t.
Search-Style Thinking Doesn’t Map Perfectly to ChatGPT
Traditional search advertising encourages marketers to think in keywords: a user searches, the advertiser identifies the query, the ad matches it. ChatGPT introduces a much richer conversational environment. The user might not express their need as a clean keyword at all. They might describe a problem, list constraints, compare alternatives, and ask follow-up questions, all in the same thread. That makes context far more important than any single query.
For marketers, this means moving from “what keyword should I target?” toward “what situation is the user in when our product becomes relevant?” That’s a real mental shift, not just a new dashboard to learn.

What We Learned About Targeting
Targeting is one of the biggest areas where ChatGPT Ads differs from conventional search advertising.
Context Matters More Than Traditional Keywords
Imagine two users. User A asks: “What are the best laptops for gaming under ₹1 lakh?” User B asks: “I travel frequently for work and need a lightweight laptop with long battery life. What should I buy?” Both are searching for laptops. But their contexts are different, and the advertiser shouldn’t necessarily send them the same message. That’s the actual opportunity in conversational advertising.
Targeting on the platform today is largely country-level, supplemented by context hints and, where available, matched audiences from your own customer lists. It isn’t demographic or interest-based targeting in the way Google or Meta advertisers are used to. The deeper question isn’t “which audience segment do I pick?” It’s “what makes your offer relevant to the user’s current situation?” That’s where marketers need to rethink strategy, more than in the targeting UI itself.
For the full breakdown of how this works mechanically, see our guide on how ChatGPT Ads work: targeting, context hints, and ad placement.
What We Learned About Ad Creative
Creative is where many traditional advertising habits can become counterproductive. In a conventional display environment, marketers sometimes lean on clever headlines, broad claims, promotional language, urgency, and visual attention tricks. ChatGPT is a different environment. The user is already engaged in a conversation, and the ad needs to make sense inside it.
That led us to a simple principle: make the ad useful before trying to make it clever. If someone is actively evaluating a solution, the strongest message may not be the loudest one. It may simply be the one that answers “why is this relevant to what I’m trying to do?”
Matching the User’s Context
Consider two messages: “Transform Your Business Today!” versus “Automate lead follow-ups for your growing sales team.” The first sounds like an advertisement. The second sounds like a potentially relevant solution. ChatGPT users are often there because they’re trying to solve something specific. The best ad experience respects that intent rather than interrupting it with an unrelated message.
Why Traditional Performance-Ad Thinking Isn’t Enough
This doesn’t mean everything marketers have learned from Google and Meta is obsolete. Far from it. Fundamentals like clear value propositions, strong landing pages, conversion tracking, testing discipline, and audience understanding still matter. What changes is the environment those fundamentals are applied in. That’s why we don’t think of ChatGPT Ads as “Google Ads, but inside ChatGPT.” It’s a distinct advertising environment with its own rules.
What We Learned About Measuring ChatGPT Ads
One of the easiest mistakes with any new advertising platform is focusing on the metrics that are easiest to see. Impressions are easy to report. Clicks are easy to report. Neither automatically tells you whether the campaign created business value.
Clicks Aren’t the Whole Story
A click is an action, but it isn’t necessarily a business outcome. Depending on the campaign, you may ultimately care about qualified leads, registrations, purchases, enquiries, demos, or subscriptions. That’s why measurement should be designed around the actual business objective from the beginning, not bolted on afterward.
What We’d Measure in a Larger Campaign
If we were scaling a campaign, we’d want to examine the complete funnel rather than a single metric: exposure → engagement → click → landing-page behaviour → conversion → business outcome. The exact KPI hierarchy would depend on the campaign objective. A brand-awareness campaign shouldn’t be judged the same way as a lead-generation campaign, and a product campaign shouldn’t be evaluated with the same metrics as a SaaS demand-generation campaign. The platform may be new. The discipline of measurement shouldn’t be.
What We’d Do Differently Next Time
Honestly, this might be the most important lesson from the whole exercise. When you’re early on a new platform, your first campaign is partly a campaign and partly a learning exercise. You’re simultaneously testing the platform, testing your assumptions, testing creative, learning the reporting, and figuring out where your existing advertising knowledge transfers and where it doesn’t.
If we were approaching another campaign, we’d place even more emphasis on hypothesis-driven testing. Instead of asking “which ad performed best?” we’d ask “which proposition works best for which type of user context, and why?” That produces a much more useful learning loop.
We’d also spend more time before launch clearly defining: the business problem, the audience situation, the core value proposition, the hypotheses we’re testing, the conversion event that actually matters, and the reporting framework we’ll judge it against. The earlier these are nailed down, the easier it becomes to interpret what the campaign is actually telling you.
Who Should Consider ChatGPT Ads in India?
Not every business needs to immediately move budget from Google or Meta into ChatGPT Ads. It should be evaluated as another potential acquisition channel, not a replacement for every other channel.
The strongest candidates are likely to be businesses where users naturally spend time researching options, comparing products, asking for recommendations, evaluating services, solving problems, or making considered decisions. That could include certain SaaS businesses, ecommerce brands, education businesses, travel companies, consumer services, and local services: basically, anywhere there’s a strong connection between what the user is asking and what you’re offering.
It’s also worth knowing upfront that OpenAI currently restricts or requires manual review for several categories, including financial services, health claims, dating, gambling, and political advertising, so eligibility depends on your category as much as your intent.
So the right question isn’t “can everyone advertise on ChatGPT?” It’s “is ChatGPT a sensible place for our customers to discover, evaluate, or act on our offering?” For a broader self-assessment, see our ChatGPT Ads Readiness Checklist for Indian Businesses.
Should Pune Businesses Advertise on ChatGPT?
For businesses in Pune, the opportunity is particularly interesting because the city has a diverse mix of technology, SaaS, education, professional services, startups, ecommerce, and local businesses. But being located in Pune doesn’t automatically make ChatGPT Ads a good fit.
The more important question is whether the business has an offering that naturally connects with the kinds of decisions users make while interacting with ChatGPT: moments like “which software should I use?”, “which course should I choose?”, “what are the best options for…?”, or “which service provider should I consider?” Those are decision-oriented moments, and decision-oriented moments are exactly what makes conversational advertising interesting.
For Pune businesses, that’s an opportunity worth testing, as long as it’s approached with the same discipline as any other performance channel, not blind enthusiasm for something new.
7 Key Takeaways From Our Early ChatGPT Ads Experience
- ChatGPT Ads aren’t simply Google Ads in a different interface. The user experience and intent signals are fundamentally different.
- Context matters more than keywords. The same product can become relevant in very different conversational situations.
- Don’t build your strategy around keywords alone. Think about the problem the user is trying to solve.
- Creative should be clear and useful. Explain the value instead of leaning on generic advertising language.
- Measurement should be designed before launch. Decide what business outcome matters before deciding which numbers to report.
- Your first campaign should also be a learning exercise. Especially on an emerging platform, experimentation is part of the value.
- Don’t assume ChatGPT Ads will replace Google or Meta. The better question is whether it adds incremental value to your existing acquisition mix.

What We Learned From Running an Early ChatGPT Ads Campaign
We came away from the experience with one overarching conclusion. The biggest opportunity in ChatGPT Ads has less to do with finding another place to put an advertisement, and more to do with advertising inside an environment where users are already explaining what they’re actually trying to accomplish.
That changes the job of the marketer. It means thinking less about “how do we interrupt the user?” and more about “when does our product become genuinely useful to this person?” That distinction may ultimately determine which brands succeed on the platform.
ChatGPT Ads are still evolving. OpenAI continues to expand campaign objectives, measurement capabilities, targeting options, and advertiser access. Nobody should pretend the playbook is finished. It isn’t. And that’s precisely why getting hands-on experience now matters.
